![]() I had my brooder cage all set up with fresh bedding, a little feed, water mixed with electrolytes and probiotics, and a chick heater to keep them warm after they hatched. Several more chicks then “pipped” Saturday evening. I looked in the handy windows on the top of the incubator and could see the “pip,” or small hole the chick makes in the egg shell to catch it’s first breath from the outside world.Īfter the chicks make the initial crack or hole in the shell, they rest for awhile to gain their strength before “unzipping” the large end of the egg so the they can get out. Saturday afternoon, I heard the first chick chirping from inside the GQF-always an exciting time. We were getting down to the final stretch and the chicks were due to hatch on a Sunday. ![]() Still, I was happy with the progress so far. I could tell that those three were clear and had not developed at all. With the exception of the three shipped Marans eggs, every egg was filled in, dark, and seemed to have a chick in it. I also decided to candle all the eggs and see what I could see when removing them from the turner. Once I reached day 18, it was time to take the automatic egg turner out. ![]() The Marans eggs, with their darker brown shell, are always hard to candle, so I gave them a pass.Įven with several days of crazy temperature fluctuations with highs in the 80s and lows into the 30s outside overnight over the 21 day incubation period-which of course affected our indoor temperatures-the GQF stayed very consistent, even though the instructions suggest keeping it in a room with a constant temperature. To my surprise, every egg I candled contained a developing chick. I typically like to see how the eggs are developing, so on the sixth day I candled a few. It seemed almost too easy-I kept thinking “Am I doing everything I’m supposed to?” It turns out I was doing my part and I was hoping the GQF was, too. With the GQF automatic egg turner, I was set free from all the extra work of turning along with the feelings of guilt when I forgot to turn them-it was great!Īll I really had to do was to check and make sure there was water in the plastic tray to keep the humidity at the proper level. With my old incubators, I had to turn the eggs by hand at least three times a day for the first 18 days of incubation, a time consuming task that always made me feel guilty if I forgot. Then, on the day I placed the eggs in the incubator, I found two Old English Game Bantam eggs in one of the coops, so I added them, too, for a total of 34 eggs. I let them rest for a day before setting all the eggs. I know there is always a risk of shipped eggs not hatching since you do not know how well they traveled, but I was willing to take the chance. I also purchased 10 Blue, Black, and Splash Marans eggs online that arrived just in time. Once it reached the correct temperature, I didn’t have to touch the thermostat again-with the help of the internal fan to circulate air, the incubator held the chosen temperature throughout.įor my first use of the incubator, I chose 7 Rhode Island Red and 15 Leghorn eggs from my own flock. I plugged in both the turner and the incubator and placed the thermometer on top of the turner to keep track of the temperature and adjust if needed. After checking to make sure that I had it set for chicken eggs, I placed the turner in the incubator with the electrical cord exiting through the provided space. The turner is capable of holding up to 41 eggs of various sizes ranging from tiny quail eggs on up to large goose eggs. It also included several useful accessories such as a plastic liner with built in water troughs, a wire floor with a easy-to-clean coating, owl clips to attach the wire floor to the plastic liner, and a thermometer.Īfter I placed the assembled liner and wire floor in the bottom of the incubator and filled the troughs with water, I was ready to position the automatic egg turner inside the incubator. The first thing I noticed was that it was made from a thicker, better quality Styrofoam than my old incubator. Once the GQF incubator with the automatic egg turner arrived, I read the directions several times and set it up accordingly. Having used Styrofoam incubators with mixed results in the past, I wasn’t sure what to expect from GQF’s 2362E Electronic Thermostat Hova-Bator. Since The Matrix, Whiteley has contributed to and collaborated on other projects in different roles. By experimenting creatively, the pair crafted cinema iconography. The digital rain remains instantly synonymous with The Matrix to this day. The detailed efforts of Whiteley, Marshall, and Animal Logic paid off. When it came time to overlay the code over live-action images, they "rendered on essentially a flat plane that was directly in front of a camera." To heighten the sense that something was perplexing, even wrong, they added Arabic numerals to the existing characters (aka the existing sushi recipes) and repeated certain characters. They mimicked "the look of text on an old IBM CRT monitor" to achieve that distinctive green shade. With the main look in place, Animal Logic dived into even more meticulous details. "I like to tell everybody that The Matrix's code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes," Whiteley reveals. An idea formed: Whiteley modeled the digital rain on Japanese typography and lifted the code straight out of that same cookbook. ![]() The more he flipped through a certain recipe magazine, the more potential he saw. Whiteley's wife is Japanese, and he turned to her for advice - and, eventually, to her cookbook collection. An employee of the Animal Logic studio, Whiteley describes his first idea as a "three-dimensional type that clicked over as it tumbled." Although the Wachowskis were appreciative, according to Whiteley, "They admired Japanese animation and martial arts films, and what they wanted to do was try and bring some of that ancient kind of feel into the code and into the graphics.” The Matrix production designer Simon Whiteley went back to the drawing board after the Wachowskis requested a title sequence redesign. Want more pasta? Check out our Foodie Guide to Pasta and Foodie Guide to Egg Pasta and our recipes. No matter the name or shape, pasta is a simple meal, synonym of Italy, and it is always sure to please everybody. Short pasta names and shapes were influenced by their times for example, at the end of the 19 th century, ditalini rigati were also known as garibaldini as a tribute to Garibaldi mafalde and mafaldine were named in honor of Princess Mafalda of Savoy (or perhaps the daughter of a pasta maker!). Examples for the second group include linguine, bavette, and trenette. The first group includes such forebears as spaghetti and vermicelli. Long pasta can be further divided into cylindrical, either solid or hollow, and rectangular or rounded. The easiest way to categorize pasta is into long, short and soup shapes. Many regions have created their own pasta shapes: for example, bigoli (thick, noodle-like spaghetti) are from Veneto strozzapreti (meaning, ‘priest strangler’) are from Emilia-Romagna trofie (perfect with pesto) are from Liguria, and orecchiette (or, ‘little ears’) are from Puglia.Īccording to Academia Barilla’s “I love pasta” recipe book, gnocchi is the forefather of all pasta it evolved into other shapes by manipulating the dough by hand or using simple tools, mixing wheat and water to produce local variations. Pasta shapes are specifically designed to hold the sauce in the best way possible. For example, spaghettini (smallest), spaghetti (regular), spaghettoni (largest). ![]() Pasta ending in 'ini' may be a smaller version of a particular shape, and pasta ending in 'oni' the larger one. In Italian, all pasta type names are plural. Other suffixes exist too: -otti ("largish") and -acci ("rough", "badly made"). Italian pasta names often end with the masculine plural suffixes –ini, -elli, -illi, -etti or the feminine plurals -ine, -elle, to convey the sense of "little" or with -oni, -one, meaning "large". In addition, pasta manufacturers and cooks may come up with new shapes or give new names to old shapes…the possibilities thus become endless! It is estimated that there are approximately 350 different types of pasta - and about four times that many names for them! This is due to the fact that some types may have different names in different languages, or even in the same language: in Italy, for example, names vary according to the region or area. ![]() As the volume of mortgages expanded and lending terms eased during the bubble, the increase in risk failed to be reflected in higher risk premiums. Observable information, including FICO and LTV, became less influential on mortgage risk pricing over time during the housing bubble. Typically banks would not want to make loans that had a high likelihood of failure, however most of these loans were packaged into mortgage-backed securities (MBS) and sold off to other investors, which held down risk premia even as loan quality deteriorated sharply: the decline in underwriting standards was accompanied by a decline in credit spreads on mortgages, after adjusting for loan/borrower characteristics. Banking Regulator Played Advocate Over Enforcer Most option ARMs were originated by OTS-regulated banks." In 2006, at the peak of the boom, lenders made $255 billion in option ARMs. "Our goal is to allow thrifts to operate with a wide breadth of freedom from regulatory intrusion," he said in a speech. "The agency championed the thrift industry's growth during the housing boom and called programs that extended mortgages to previously unqualified borrowers as "innovations." In 2004, the year that risky loans called option adjustable-rate mortgages took off, then-OTS director James Gilleran lauded the banks for their role in providing home loans. These loans become more popular during booms where people feel future gains are certain & risk-free. When market conditions are normal and risk is accurately priced these loans are not very popular, as owners who make the minimum payments may be building debt rather than building equity. These shifts in payments can lead to a "payment shock" which makes the loan unaffordable. The interest rate on the loan also regularly resets up to a lifetime cap of something around 5% above the initial interest rate charged, based on the performance of a referenced index rate. When this neg am limit is reached the loan is recast & minimum payments are automatically shifted to the fully amortizing payment. Most option ARM contracts which allow for negative amortization have a maximium negative amortization limit (at 110% to 125% of the initial loan amount). When borrowers consistently make pay-option payments below the accured interest the loan becomes negative amortizing, with the loan balance growing over time. These loans are typically 30-year ARMs which enable the borrower to "pick-a-payment" between four amounts: a fully amortizing 30-year payment, a fully amortizing 15-year payment, an interest-only payment, and a specified minimum payment. ![]() The tab above shows current local mortgage rates. To view a more detailed report of the loans, click on the button. ![]() You will then see graphs of the monthly payments for the different loan types. When you are done entering your details click on the button. Click the on the right side of the calculator to add details to any section. The following calculator shows initial monthly payments for option-ARM, ARM & FRM home loans along with how one might expect the monthly payments to change over time. Like most other ARMs, payments then typically reset annually. These low monthly payments, however, are temporary as the interest rates reset to higher levels after 1 to 3 months & then remain fixed for a year. The option-ARM loan uses a low initial rate of interest to offer borrowers a low initial monthly payment which is typically significantly lower than they would achive via a fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) or a traditional adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM). This calculator enables home buyers to quickly compare option-ARM and fixed rate mortgage payments.
